The NHS is dead and rotting
So true, like every other part of the public sector in this sucking state, it is built to serve the people who work in it and sooth the lefty PC one-world consciences of those who control it.

If you want a decent GP, you're more likely to find one in the UK. Even with choice, it's not that easy to find a good doc. The service is good - you can see them really quickly. And if you need an MRI scan, you'll get it tomorrow. But, they don't see nearly anything like as much as a UK GP, and are subsequently less experienced.

OTOH, if you're any good at self diagnosis, you can see the specialist direct. But you risk the insurance company not paying!

I'm sure your anti-bacterial antibiotics will do a lot of good for your viral infection.

Get well soon Lucy - Typicl of the NHS iIMHO!

must be the same everywhere, I had the occasion to go see my GP a couple of years ago showing siymptoms of Mumps. At a time when there was a Mumps epidemic throughout some UK universities (you may remember that in the papers?)- several people in my girlfriends Uni class had mumps too.

Anyhoo, i was told that there hadn't been a case of mumps in a number of years, my GP hadn't actually seen a case and referred to a frikken medical dictionary for symptoms and still said i didn't have it and to go home with some paracetamol for the sore throat etc.

2 days later - rushed into hospital with swollen bollocks!!!! Couldn't stand up couldn't move, Mumps; glandular infection had gone to little beekers two veg. Hospital for a week and lost a stone in weight.

Official diagnosis - viral infection. - yeah, Mumps!!

GPs are generalists so they have to look things up or refer you to a specialist.

If you get a good one and your case is unusual enough in their experience they will look things up and call you to come back to the surgery or tell you to go to hospital if it's serious

Unfortunately like in every job you get loads who can't be bothered to do their job properly.

It is particularly bad in this country, I have lived in Australia, NZ, HK and spent about six months in the US and I have never had doctors as pathetic as they are here. It's communism at it's best, they get paid nomatter what they deliver, and people have no real choice.

                    Hope you recover soon Lucy...

It's a shame - some Dr's are tulip and some are good - my current one is really good... doesn't pull any punches and so far has always "fixed" me.

Last one was atrocious though - trying to get past the rothweiler on reception was bad enough, then you get to a gobtulipe of a Dr..... nightmare

Was misdiagnosed, last time I went in I was seen by the nurse - this was decided by a receptionist, now I am very ill and the flipwit doctor I see tells me that it wasn't the nurse's fault.

I also complained to him about the other doctor I had seen in the same practice who didn't know the difference between EMDR and NLP, he responded by saying she was 'very good' and 'a friend of his'. Well, phooey, she might be a great friend but she is a rubbish doctor - like him.

In some countries you can choose your doctor, in the way you choose an accountant or solicitor. A friend can recommend a doctor and it isn't restricted by where you live, and here's the key, the doctor doesn't get their 100k automatically, it depends on how many patients they see. Imagine; doctors who don't suck of the tit of the state.

The NHS is dead and rotting, when is it going to change? Probably not in my lifetime.
Agree with you 100% Lucy. I went 10 years misdiagnosed by two GPs. In the end I found out what I had by looking on the Internet. Sorry to hear about your illness. Vic chest rub is the best remedy for you. I have a jar and I can pop around apply it if you wish. Get well soon.
