    Melbourne

    - Any of you lot worked out there?
    - Positive/negative experience?
    - What rate would allow me and the family a more than comfortable lifestyle?

Been there on holiday 3 times, it's my favourite city on the planet and my intended destination when I emigrate.

Never worked there though so can't help with your questions, sorry!

I've worked there for a few months a couple of times. Pleasant enough but never really did it for me in comparison to Sydney when I was young free and single. I'd say it's about as expensive as non London UK. The rates generally aren't up to much unless you are pretty specialised but the the contract market isn't bad as quite a few of the big Co's are HQ'ed in Melb rather than Sydney.

Its fooking freezing. I was there 2 xmas ago for the ashes. Xmas day, 4 degrees and raining (compared to 12 degrees and sunshine back in england). Hardly the bbq on the beach I had been sold!

That said, if you like vietamese noodle soup, theres a cracking place in town for that. Bill clinton had 2 bowls.

        HTH.
The Mods stole my post count!

Slave I adore Melbourne, esp. Toorak/Sth Yarra, house prices are slightly better than Sydney, but I've never lived there.

Melbourne is cosmopolitan and much more european than Sydney, I really enjoy it every time I go, sorry I can't be more helpful.

Thanks Roots, sounds slightly more expensive than what I was expecting. Young, free and single has passed me by unfortunately.

Can't answer directly but I'm off there too (see here) in Jan.

I have a colleague who's from Melbourne, a friend who lived and worked there and still has a property out there and some friends emigrating there on 1st August. If you have any specific questions I can probably get an answer.

A useful site I've found recently is this one

It's a nice place but it's a little too near Derby.

It has also passed me by now , what I was saying was I might have a different and more favourable opinion if I returned now with family in tow. What I would say is Mr Average Contractor is certainly financially better off in the UK than in Oz. However for a change of scene why not give it whirl and see for yourself !?
