One (of many) cause of knife crime is the breakdown in families that has accelerated under New Labour. Indeed the traditional family of one earner is the most taxed entity under the current New Labour government.

This lack of a family environment has created a generation who have no proper role model of behaviour and have in addition looked elsewhere for the 'family' they are missing and it is this surrogate family which has provided the rules under which they live.

Indeed a recent report sponsored by Gordon Brown (but strangely little heard of) has shown that to reduce crime the traditional nuclear family should be encouraged, even through the tax and benefits system. That would include things like income shifting - rather than reducing opportunities as the Government wants to do, increase them - such as allowing spouses to file a joint tax return.

So yes, the current increase in Knife Crime is indeed down to New Labour policies who have created a benefits and taxation system that actually discourages strong families. Although that is a long way from suggesting that there was no knife crime under the Tories (just not the weekly report of another teenager knifed to death in the streets)

Yes, the breakdown of the family never happened under the tories. Actually wait a minute, most of the knife crime is amongst the 16-30 group, which means in the political timeline ...

FFS. Perspective, there's only so much you can hold a political party responsible for, and it's stretching it to suggest it's purely a NL inspired phenomena (Or tory to be fair) rather than society, and social trends as a whole.

Look at where the knife crime exists - you really think the ability to file a joint tax return really is going to make SFA difference in the ghettos of Britains large cities ...

I think you will find that is exactly what I am saying. The weaker family is a social trend which dates back well into the 70's. However it is under primarily Labour governments when the rules discouraging strong families have been created.

The reference to Joint Income Returns is to encourage people to stay together rather than seperate - at the moment the tax and benefits system, as well as easy divorce actually encourage seperation. Study the relevent statistics and you will find that petty crime is highest from seperated families.

This weakening of the family structure is not helped by the benefits and taxation system that has been created under New Labour, and it's other policies which actively discourage strong families. It would also help if teachers could discipline little Janet and Johnny without said little scrotes running to the courts with an assault charge and that almost certainly has happened in the last decade.

New Labour may not have created the problem but it's policies have almost universally exasberated it.

Yep, if you want to be tough on crime you have to be tough on the causes of crime. Ban iPods.

Yep, though they have been successful in discouraged theft of gramophones and wireless sets.
