My father died when I was 6. Obviously emotionally traumatic - plus we went from being well off to poverty stricken (free school meals etc).

I hope the lad recovers quicker than I did.

I dont agree with the sentiment. I get happy or sad about lots of things that I can't influence or do anything about.
I get happy or sad about things that happened 100's, even 1000's of years ago.
I get happy or sad about abstract things that aren't even real, like events in games, or imagining someones emotions even though the someone might not even exist.
I get happy or sad depending on how well Everton do on a saturday.
I guess that makes me a bit scummy too.

But why do you agree with the sentiment?

Have you never supported (even half-heartedly) any sports teams?

Millions of people do, and they aren't knuckle-dragging scum.

I'm a rugby fan (union rules) and I've never been that bothered about soccer. OTOH my wife is an avid Chelsea fan (with good reason: she was actually born in SW3).

I know football has a problem with some of it's devotees but calling everyone scum is an injustice. I know lots of nice people who follow football teams.

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Please read the quote I referred to. The quote was about getting emotional about something you cannot control.

maybe SG has to be nice at clientco to survive the credit crunch and this is reflected in his new improved mood?

Now you're taking things out of context. I did not call everyone who follows a football team.

IMHO, it is not acceptable to cry because your team - whatever the sport - lost!

The message that I think Chuchill was trying to convey was that if a child is getting sufficiently upset at the age of 7 about what is essentially a game then there is something wrong. I think children at that age should be enouraged to participate/watch/support as much sport as possible. However the emphasis should be on fun. I know what it's like taking a sport very seriously ( I had delusions of becoming a professional tennis player until the age of about fifteen). I also know that my parents never failed to emphasise that if it was not fun then it's not worth doing.

Therefore what I am trying to say is that what should have been a fun family day out to watch the football does not need to end in tears and the leap from there to becoming another one of 'those' fans regarding football is not unrealistic. However the leap to 'scum' is probably a step far which is what I said.

I think I have stated that the connotation surrounding the word scum made its use unnecessary.

That's not the issue here and you know it.

You called the guy's kid scum. (next generation of scum) did you not?

                      At the age of 7!!!!!

I'm pretty sure you cried about something you couldn't control at the age of seven, it's just you can't remember that far back - hence your ridiculous attitude here.

Calling the kid scum because he hasn't learned to control his emotions yet is more than harsh, it's ******* rude.
