Does anyone use twitter?

I just signed up today and so far the only use I can see is a way of updating facebook statuses.

Does it have any other uses other than saying "I am doing ________" which Facebook does already?

Microblogging - why would anybody care what I'm having for lunch/feeling/doing tonight?

I'm perfectly capable of informing people I want to attend an event about said event, or emailing if I'm going to be late. Not everybody in my circle of friends need to know that do they?
