OK, well fyi no - it's not really that common except on the burmese border.

Cheers Chef, I'd knew I'd get through the dross and get one or two useful tips.

This is a contractor board. We all travel 1st class, in stretched limos, to our 5 star hotels, where we shout at the hotel staff because we want Evian in our bathwater and petals on our pillows.
Doesn't want 5* cos it costs don it!

Maybe he's just tight as ****. Many contractors are. They prefer to spend on sound investments like BTL/MTR.

Stayed on Koh Samui for a few months in 2004.

The Spa or The Tamarind are quite nice. The Spa is cheap, easy, friendly place with nice beaches and good fresh food.

Actually in all seriousness, I genuinely don't like holiday resorts, no matter how many stars they have. I've tried those holidays (With a kid as well) and there's something very sterile and sheep like about them and the guests.

There's a saying I like which kind of touches on it:

Tourists don't know where they've been, travellers don't know where they're going.

I'm definitely in the second category.

another suggestion Ko Samet, also great beaches and not that popular with the yoof crowd, plus only 2.5 hrs from Bangkok.

Met my parents there when i was travellign asia, stayed in a beach hut, they loved it, thought it was paradise

Oooh the hostility. And yeah I'd classify myself as a traveller, given I've lived in several cities on three continents, and have several big stints backpacking various other continents.

The thread I thought was pretty clearly titled, but I know you're a bit thick so I'll let you off.

oh didums I touched a nerve. If you are going to dish it out, expect to take it.

Your 'travelling' cv isnt that impressive and sure as heck living in a few different countries doesnt make you a traveler.. and your lame saying of not knowing 'where you are going' making you a traveller.. get a grip. I always laugh a folks like you that I meet when I am away in various countries... take yourself so very seriously, when in reality you are just yet another tourist with delusions of being superior.

Qui Nhon in Vietnam, a short flight from Saigon. Great beaches, few westerners. The best fish and chips on the planet from Barbara's Kiwi Connection. Local food in abundance, of course. They do a good beer, based on rice, for about 15p 33cl. Everyone accepts $ or €. 4* hotel with aircon $50 a night - but even then, don't expect western service!

Independent travel is possible, but it's best to get a tour company to arrange things for you. I went with these guys, and they were great. They will cater for beach holidays rather than tours.
Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!
