How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Dumb campaign - in the current binge drinking climate any chancellor, no matter which party was in power would have done something similar.
In real terms alcohol has dropped significantly over the last 20 years or so, since it's not been rising with inflation so whacking a couple of extra percent above inflation on it makes no odds.
That's not to say I agree with the rise, but the campaign is plain opportunism - there are many other things they could get the tw@t on, but raising beer prices isn't really one of them.Hang on - there is actually a place called Cheddar?? - cailin maith

It's just another tax rise simple as that. Will affect libours core supporters more, so a bit of an own goal. What about putting up taxes on food as in the current fat bastard climate any chancellor should consider something similar.Comment

Not really what I'm saying, I don't necessarily agree with the reasons for the rise, but it's a political move any of the parties would have made in the current climate of newspapers, pressure groups etc screaming about binge drinking culture and low alcohol prices - even tescos are saying alcohol is too cheap ffs.Hang on - there is actually a place called Cheddar?? - cailin maith
