I'm a very odd squirrel, I feel unsafe now.

My grandad was a master of a lodge up North - have his certificate and paraphernalia in a box in the loft. As a student I used to work in a hotel that catered for lodge meetings - one of them once said I was entitled to join if my grandad was a member, but that could be rubbish for all I know.

Chances are you will know if someone is a Mason if they are related or close friends, or by someone else who discloses they are to you. In general members won't openly disclose this - although there are members who do this it goes against the rules.

The Grandfather thing doesn't ring any bells with me.

There's no automatic right of acceptance even for the son of a mason. If accepted there are certain priviledges for the son of a Mason, namely:

• The right to be known as a "Lewis"
• If there are a number of initiates then if you're a Lewis you can be moved to the head of the waiting list.
• If special dispensation is granted a Lewis may join at 18, not 21.

My best mate is a freemason. He was saying that you had to express an interest to join then he would put you forward or something.

personally I disagree about accepting that there may be a higher power so I couldn't join. I also disagree at paying the amount they do each month. For the chance to wear a tux occasionally?

I think he pays something close to 5-10% of his salary to them. Which either he gets paid not a lot or they are really expensive.
