Get the odd comment, sometimes just banter, sometimes they seem genuinely bitter. But once you say "nothing stopping you from doing it" (apart from a huge chip on the shoulder) they soon shut up, or mention job security, having a mortgage, pension etc. Let them think they're actually better off if they like.
Don't mention that their 7% pension and 25 days holiday doesn't add up to a 60 grand a year difference.

Its hilarious when the management start discussing outsourcing and they all tulip themselves - so much for security, the top brass want to minimise pension liabilities and redundancy payoffs, so while they are worrying about their jobs you get an extension and hear they want more contractors to join

One of my old Uni friends works his arse off, does OK, but seems bitter when I tell him how easy I have it. The only difference is he's a sap; he'll burn the midnight oil for his employer, only to receive a pat on the back and a tiny pay rise (with more responsibilities of course.)

He calls me a "freeloader", which I accept as a compliment

I believe people like that simply cannot be helped, and perhaps we shouldn't try. They believe their suffering is noble and righteous, and that income cannot be created by being smart it can only be a compensation for suffering. They are a necessary part of the economy, the business owner who gives the pat on the back needs people like this to keep the costs of running their businesses down. People like this is why companies can afford consultants/contractors.

Pat a permie on the back today.

I used to wind the permy's up at a job last year by stuffing my wallet full of 20's then pulling a wad out at lunch looking for a fiver to pay for a sandwich followed by "can anyone change a 20 I don't have any small change", They all complained about low wages but none of them would grow a pair and take the plunge into the cash river.
Some people are like slinkys, totally pointless but the thought of pushing them down a flight of stairs never fails to put a smile on your face.

The place I currently contract is quite a left wing establishment, even socialist perhaps.

There are many old-school union types to be found here, though I don't see much resentment of contractors. I think jealously would be a betrayal of their socialist ideals...!

That's deliberately provocative, and says a lot about you as a supposed human being.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
