For ending the closed shop mentality that turned the workplace into a dictatorship run by the unions that were destroying the very people they were supposed to protect.
The unions wanted higher wages for their members, wages that were unsupportable, yet the same union heavies refused the industries the right to lay off the workers that they could no longer support.
Why? because the union fatcats needed the income generated by the subs that the union members paid.
The more union members, the more subs, the higher the wages the higher the subs. It meant that the union fatcats could continue to wield power and live a life of luxury off the backs of the workers and the industries.
Maggie put a stop to that.
It meant that all those unnecessary and unsupportable jobs went away. It meant that industry could once again develop in tune with the rest of Europe.
It is just unfortunate that the unions had held sway for so long in the North that industry had been decimated. Thousands of unnecessary people were working for what were in effect, Bankrupt Industries supported by government handouts.
When the government cashflow stopped, so did the jobs for life system.Confusion is a natural state of beingComment

Who was it preventing industry from upgrading to new techniques and technologies?
Why did Fords shut up their most advanced production line, (which was in Doncaster,) with the best industrial relations, and move the manufacturing to their most backwards line in a factory with the worst industrial relations?
I think the problems were far deeper than just saying "Union Barons" and Maggie fixed an awful lot of other stuff that, when you read threads like this, obviously people don't really understand.Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.

So resentful are the left of Thatcher that further stripped of a moral focus for their guilt (socialism doesnt work, live with it), that logic or debate have given way to SASworld and or abuse.
So bitter are they that Thatcher single handedly killed the evil lefties and gave the working class the real opportunities to step up (when they should be kept in their places no doubt) and use their new found opportunities to create markets for bling and designer acroutrements that they completely miss the real weaknesses of Thatcher.
First of all like most people drugged by power, the power went to her head. She came to believe that just because she was right about some things that she was also right about everything (the poll tax); she didnt go early enough;. And whilst all the whining lefties accused her of killing off manufacturing that in their haste to support the unsupportable inefficient industries such as car production and mining they were unwittingly right. But instead of being intelligent lefties as opposed to die hard bigots they picked the wrong targets.
Thatcher was a clunking fist that was so one dimensional that inevitably damage was going to be done. One of the real reasons for example that manufacturing "disappeared" was not because of the break up of British leyland but because she failed to stimulate any growth in the economy during the inevitable recession. There were no infrastructure projects for example and as a result the countrys educational establishment stopped churning out top quality engineers. Oh and then there was the entering of the ERM. I could go on.
Benn0, SAS , Bagpuss your bigotry , your snobbery, your whatever has made you so blind you cant see the open goals in front of you. If you had been genuinely concerned about the hell that was suffered by the poor northerners then you would pick the targets as they sit in front of you. But of course this all about you, not the working class is it not?Last edited by DodgyAgent; 10 March 2008, 10:26.Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyoneComment

I have mixed feelings about Maggie
On the one hand she stopped society as a whole being dominated by one faction of it (the left, socialist part), but that left the other faction (the right, capitalist part) in control. This damaged society as well but in the opposite way.
Yes, the unions did all the things that they have been accused of doing and it was good that Maggie stopped this before it got too much out of control and manufacturing and wealth creation got stifled. But she replaced it with a society that idolised the greediness, the "I'm all right Jack, s** you" society that failed to recognise that there are genuinely people amongst us that have the right to be supported and should be supported.Last edited by KathyWoolfe; 10 March 2008, 11:15. What exactly was wrong with the Poll Tax? I still think it's a pretty darn good idea.Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.
