I'm a bit young to remember the poll tax (I remember the riots but don't really understand the tax structure). How was it different to council tax?

Council tax is a tax only on property owners. Community Charge is a tax on all people living in that area.

I think Maggie's idea was that if people who voted in the loony councils with their free-spending ways had to actually pay for it, it'd maybe put a stop to it.

      Way more fair IMHO.

Yes, the unions did all the things that they have been accused of doing and it was good that Maggie stopped this before it got too much out of control and manufacturing and wealth creation got stifled. But she replaced it with a society that idolised the greediness, the "I'm all right Jack, s** you" society that failed to recognise that there are genuinely people amongst us that have the right to be supported and should be supported.
This "me" "me" society that Maggie supposedly created is a complete myth. Before her society we had so called "caring socialism". That is because the population were conned into believing that collectivism was somehow at least motivated by kindness, sharing and altruism. Maggie stripped down these false idols and showed them for what they really are.. oppressive (to the poor) self serving and above all else useless in what they did.

The other factor that creates this so called "me me" falsehood is that most of the beneficiaries of the knock down of socialism were the working class themselves. Empowered by home ownership they had the temerity to break away from their mines and production lines and work in the city, sales, IT contracting and other "me, me" jobs.

Saw a sketch on Spitting Image recently circa 1984 alluding to her baldness. I think its important that we know the truth.

The voters generally don't like baldies. Maybe she lost her place, not because of the Poll Tax, but because of the rumours she was bald.
