One of them even shot an extremist yesterday!
I've worked in Jerusalem where people bring their guns into the office!

What part of the mil did you serve in Threaded?

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Well, I started off by being commissioned into the hussars, death and glory boys, and then moved onto a different lot altogether. Although I still hold a soft spot for my first unit, and can still do the dance as proven the other evening.
Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.

That'd be the "1st Walter Mitty Brigade" then, eh?

I went to Eilat years ago and was in a restaurant when a load of soldiers came in and sat down to eat, propping their M16s against the table.
You used to see 17 year old girls in casual clothes wandering around with automatic weapons, all very "chicks with guns".

I guess you can see the same thing in South London these days.

Threaded, I'm sure _you_ wouldn't exaggerate or tell any porkies. But anyone who does needs to be aware that the British Army now has a crack team of merciless walt hunters, the Waltenkommando, as detailed on the Waltism ARRSEpedia page. See also their hilarious guide to Walting with Confidence.

In any case, it's not traditional for armed forces members to be out and about in uniform during peacetime. I think that's always been true in recent times, but certainly the Duke of Wellington agreed and ordered soldiers to wear mufti wherever practical when off duty outside barracks.

Yeah, what is this thing with wearing uniforms off-duty? You don't see firemen, or nurses, or paramedics etc parading around in uniform when they're off-duty, unless they're popping into the newsagents on the way home or something, and most of them are "front line heroes" on a daily basis. Air stewardesses should be encouraged though.
