If you won 1 million on the lottery, what would you spend it on?
Yep, agree, snaw, this is not actually a lot of money, even though it is not taxed - which is a big wrong thing IMO - taxing businesses that create jobs and value on one hand, but not taxing lottery wins on another? That's totally wrong.
You are taxed on all gambling. You either pay the tax up front on the stake, or at the end on the winnings. National Lottery just doesn't give you the choice, but a bookie would.

I believe there is a euromilions jackpot of £95 million tonight that must be won?
I am going to look through the "fascination of maths" thread for tips on picking the winning numbers.
If you won 1 million on the lottery, what would you spend it on?
£1 million - pay off the house, buy another car (always wanted a Landrover defender), take some more time off, retrain in something I might enjoy, and take it a bit easier.
£95 million - give at least £50million away or setup The FaQQer Benevolent Trust or something to do it for me. Move, buy lots of houses and travel the world forever, wife and kids in tow.

Are you sure ticket sales are taxed? Is there VAT on them?
Either way I think that any win should be treated as income - 40% tax for high rate taxpayers. But of course if this happened less people would play, probably a lot less - so Govt keeps lottery as a tax on fools, in effect "good deeds" by Lottery is private scheme to milk part of what should be normal taxation and put some of it back into where those tax dollars belong.
