    EU Rules

Your g/f is Italian (EU) so you are bound to apply EU rules, ie same treatment as for UK citizens. Note however, that France has recently decided to STOP free medical treatment to all non-French EU residents that are not of school or retirement age, thus affecting a lot of British ex-pats that chose early retirement there and have no private health. Seems that different rules apply there.

Well yes, but thats the French for you. The Italians have started deporting EU citizens aswell.

So if as you say all EU citizens are entitled to free health care as per a UK resident, who is it that is abusing the system and should pay ?

        FWIW.
I think we should scrap the reciprocal (sp?) agreements we have with other countries in the EU and require all foreign nationals to take out medical insurance for the term of their visit.
They should not have to contribute NI but would not be entitled to any benefits either.
Any treatment given in emergency cases to non insured visitors should be charged to their country of origin and we should not accept visitors from countries that will not pay without proof of insurance.

We have a superb benefits system and it attracts outsiders. Even workers who will contribute as the benefits far outweigh the costs when there is a short term need.

The other issue here is one raised by CD some time ago.
The birth rate amongst foreign born mothers has doubled in 10 years. The birth rate for Brits is falling. One day Brits will be a minority.

On the other side of the coin. We have an ageing nation. We need more kids so that we can afford to look after our elderly. We need those council baby factories and imported kids. The issue is how we make them pay and not become a burden themselves.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

          Ok, here goes.

Health tourists from India, Pakistan, any other f'kin'stan you can dream of.

My Mother used to work in "Medical Audit" and part of her role was to turn up at said "Health Tourists" hospital bed and ask how they were going to pay for their treatment...

            All others

Foreign students/failed asylum-seekers/anyone not from EU that is not a British citizen/national - for starters!
            Happy now?

Disagree... we need less people on this small overcrowded island. A declining birth-rate would be beneficial and manageable
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

Why not expand the role and put a medical audit rep on every hospital reception?

In the not too distant future there will be more people draing on the sytem than contributing. How doyou propose to pay the costs if there are not enough working?

Well a foreign student studying in Britain should be entitled surely.

An asylum seeker that has failed will no doubt be deported. In the meantime if her water breaks do we stick her on the plane straight away ? What if the doc says she is not fit for air travel ? If she has no cash should we just leave her to it. Should we stop anyone with a bump entering the uk just incase ?

Anyone not from EU that is not a British citizen. Who do you mean ? Tourists ? Asylum seekers who have been successful ? Indian\Pakistani women who have moved permanetly to Britain and are now\will be British citizens ? Women on work visas ? Or illegal immigrants ? Whoever it is lets imagine the worst - a pennyless illegal immigrant - should we refuse to help that woman give birth ? (I'm not claiming to have the answers by the way - I am just interested in views).

By pretty much what they are proposing to do - withdrawing medical treatment from the elderly... say after 70 you are on your own unless you want to pay for it privately
