It's being repaired under warranty as I write this - but inevitably there's no warranty on the repair itself.

The worrying thing is that it failed after 8 months in the first place - especially when compared to the 20 year old CRT workhorse covered in dust and fag smoke that most of the older generation seem to have in their living rooms.

If you are not planning on having anything which uses HD then there is no point buying a TV with full HD 1080p. When I bought ours, the big one downstairs (fnarr!) is a full 1080p and was got for about £850 42 inch LCD (Sharp) - this is hooked up to the HD box and PS3. The smaller one upstairs (32 inch LCD - LG) does not get used that often and so is not a 1080p one - it only has free view which does not yet have HD broadcasts. The smaller screen looks fine on standard def, better than the big one.

In a couple of years all the big 1080p tv's will be dirt cheap as we will all be wanting the next big thing.

My main castle room is so big that I bought an HDTV OLED v2 for each of the pixels of my super large screen: it looks good from the other side of my reception room.

CRT's may not be the nicest things to look at, but I imagine the failure rate in comparison to current LCDs and plasmas is pretty low.

I got ours from empire direct - you can buy a card for £20 which covers everything you buy for 3 years.

I would agree it is slightly limited. I am presuming of course that it could only improve. I do watch a shedload of sport and appreciate watching it in HD when possible.

Ah Sport - that's the one thing I don't have on my subscription - If you enjoy watching sport then I could see how that would be desirable...might get it for the 6 nations though

Ok, this is not really the right place to ask but I though a bunch of you might have some practical experience.

I found the SD picture better on a HD ready set rather than a full HD set, and as all of your viewing will be SD then my advice would be to save the cash.

The 40" Sony LCD HD Ready is a great bit of kit.

Get John Lewis to price match, they give all TV's a free 5 year warranty.

SD picture will always look worse when you have more pixels to stretch across, a HD picture on a 720P would be indistinguishable to a 1080P on a 37” LCD at 8 feet as they human eye cant detect the extra resolution, you’d only start to notice on a bigger screen or when sitting closer.
