    Chantho is correct. The answer is certainly not what I expected.

    Mind you I am really enjoying Sasguru's book on stats - I have not got beyond the coin toss stuff and some of the results are amazing! Shows where I went wrong on gambling (I never gamble now as I always lose).

    makes me feel thick with just a degree in maths.

    I will try to post up some of the stuff from the book sometime...

      D: Debt
      d: Money due in January pay
      T: Time since Christmas
      Q: Time since failed quit attempt
      M: General motivational levels
      NA: The need to take action

        women = moneyXtime
        time = money
        money = root of all evil
        women = (sqr root evil)X(sqr root evil)
        women = (sqr root evil)*2
        women = evil

        SA/CM - that was a joke....

        isn't there one involving power?

          Dilbert's "Salary Theorem" states that "Engineers and
          scientists can never earn as much as business executives
          and sales people."

          This theorem can now be supported by mathematical proof
          based on the following two postulates:

          Postulate 1: Knowledge is Power.

          Postulate 2: Time is Money.

          As every scientist knows: Power = Work / Time.

          Since Knowledge = Power, then Knowledge = Work / Time.

          Since Time = Money, then Knowledge = Work / Money.

          Solving for Money, we get Money = Work / Knowledge.

          Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches
          infinity, regardless of the amount of work done.

          Conclusion: The less you know, the more you make.

            Daughter has a present of a cup and six dice. When she makes a first throw she gets a set of numbers, some are repeated and so they go back in the cup and get thrown again. How many throws, on average, will it take to produce all the numbers 1 thru' 6?

                Is this some sort of maths question? If Denny has an apple then gives it to BP, how many apples does he have?

                  Easy. Work out the probability of doing it with 6 throws - multiply by 6, then 7 throws - multiply by 7, up to n throws - multiplied by n. Add up these numbers and divide by n. Then work out the limit as n tends to infinity.

                  The actual calculation is left as an exercise for the reader.

                      Close. More along the lines that I know how to do it (as indicated), but can't be bothered to do the actual work.
