The true answer to this thread though is.

Wherever you move, you are likely to find you end up in a contract at the other end of the country. The gods are perverse like that

True - the week I moved north (from just outside Reading), I started a new gig.

        In Bristol.

            I contest your devil status!

I live and work in London, better rates.

How long is a piece of a string?

One of the most idiotic posts I've seen. If you've got a family, think of them first, not yourself. Where are your close family/friends (if any) ? Also, why would you need to commute? Anything over 90 mins each way is not worth.
If you mean driving, it's the worst type of commuting.
People that like commuting (driving) tend to live in places like Reading or Slough or Swindon or worse (is there?)
Any half-decent contractor would do Mon/Fri - if need to be away from home - travelling by plane/train and staying in a hotel or appartment. All travel/accommodation deductible - obviously eating into your profits, but you are a businessman, so you should know.

I'd say the home counties, near a suburban line into london if you need it, is ideal.

Im in the M4 corridor area right now, between london and reading, and its turned out very good for the past 3 contracts - none of them being more than 35-60 minutes drive away, and all accessible by train if need be.

.... more importantly its outside of london, where i dont want to work. But its a necessary evil in some cases so its handy being within an hour on the train to waterloo.
