    too specialised? What is it military-based ? I can't think of a skill which would be England-only in IT...unless its related to football. Please enlighten.

      I have no opinion on whether it is fair or not to be honest. It's just the way it is.. first year is always the worst but next year you will only have to make a balancing payment and then the payment on account for the following year so wont be as big a hit.

          Yikes......scary scenario.

          I've been putting 0 on my PAYE, except the last quarter, where I declare the income and make the tax and NIC payments. Works just fine for me.

            hmm, I managed to keep myself below the threshold before... came as a rude shock! I still think the interest policy is ludicrous though.

                I think the amount is determined from your SA form, so how you structure the PAYE payments during the year doesn't make any difference AFAIK

                  You can send them a form to reduce your payments on account. Your accountant should have told you about it.
