High blood sugar makes the body produce insulin.
Insulin decreases blood sugar by storing the glucose as FAT.
And the worst part, ALL carbs turn to glucose when digested.
CARBS make you fat.Comment

Have a read of the original Dr Atkins book. It makes for interesting reading as to why the US (at that time, in the 60's) was heading for an obesity pandemic. NB he was a cardiac surgeon who was loosing $100,000's because he was not allowed by American law to operate on obese patients. Having found a seemingly foolproof Diet he then spent the rest of his days fighting an increasingly powerful 'food' lobby and their smears.Comment

Low carb is the key to preventing obesity. Atkins was a pioneer!

Oddly Atkins researched this in the 60's and the only study of human nutrition that he found was done by HMG on the outbreak of WW2. They knew we'd need to ration food to make it through the oncoming conflict. The study involved feeding mice exclusively on one food source + water. One set got Carbs, one fat and one fibre. The only ones to survive any length of time were the one fed fat. So before the 'advice' of a low fat diet was given to the Nation after the war they knew it was bad advice.
BTW my missus got me into Atkins and she calls it the 'Man diet' as most men don't realise it's a 'Diet' in the lose weight sense, as you get to eat plenty of meat.Comment

It is also highly likely that historical low diagnosis levels were caused by the same factors that masked heart disease & cancer 50 years ago.
I am only prejudiced against type 2 because whilst there is always the exception the large majority of type 2 (95% in America) is caused by lifestyle choice and what you find is many people who contract it look for any excuse to show it was not caused by their choice to shove pies and crisps down their necks and sitting on their a*rseComment
