Did it not occur to you that hire contract companies are not exactly stupid and they get even bigger depreciation of their assets because their cars (especially BMWs) are driven by w....rs who know it is not their car so they don't drive it carefully and therefore value of car after this driving is even less than from "one careful lady driver"?

We have hired over 50 cars this way over the last 10 years and so far we have not had any big bills except for excess mileage, which we planned anyway. This was the first BMW we have ever had and it will now be the last.

Fair enough, but I question wiseness of car hire for long term driving - the only benefit here is that of image: you are seen to drive "fresh" car that is not 5-7 year old, why did you need to hire so many cars anyway?

probably depends on how they dispose. Some just drive them straight to the auction. Then maybe hit you if it gets below book.

If they have a deal to pass on to a dealer then maybe more likely to come after you.

Lots of recruitment consultants to who cars are very important. Nowdays thety buy their own with car allowances as the govt has taxed them out of it (one of the few good taxes that I quite like). The good thing about new cars on contract hire is that their costs are visible and consistent with no unpredictable bills, so budgeting is a lot easier.

Every business person goes through this when building their company. having lots of flash salesmen with smart cars is (subconsciously) perceived to be sign of success, particularly with companies that are service orientated. I remember the sun microsytems car park awash with GTis, and top end BMW 3 series, and that was for their non sales staff as well.

One of the lessons that none of us ever learn from otherwise is that cars are basically a waste of money.

it is a question of what is right for me, and you made me think about my car policy, it was not a question of me right and you being wrong (unlike most of our "debates" ) ( and notice that thanks to you I now leave a gap between my last letter and my smiley )

Well, in all fairness I think that it looks like you know what you are doing, and it is just due to volume of stuff that you do you happened to have bad luck, statistically it was unavoidable, so I think in this instance you are right even if you get totally screwed on this particular deal. It does not matter if you leave space between word and smilies, I hate it only what shaun-bhoy does - put smile on new line like this:

I thought this was going to happen to me when I gave my contract hire 3 series back.

I had managed to reverse it into a metal post and quite badly dent and scratch the rear bumper.

Never got round to getting it repaired before the car had to go back. I thought I was going to be hammered for it.

£240 bill for the repairs!!

When i got married in July the mrs hired me a Ferrari 360 spider which i managed to scuff the Alloy and front bumper on a low curb entering a one lane bridge. I was sh1tting myself that i would have to pay for a new bumper and alloy and on a ferrari thought this ain't going to be cheap....had £5000 excess but only came to £525 which i was happy about and quite pleased.
