Yes they are free to go where they want, which is fine, but in one place they
can pay more tax than in other.

Why should UK taxpayer pay for stuff that London exclusively uses? Like this Crossrail link - based on Scottish example it seems that this amount of money would be enough for free prescriptions, free education etc. Why the heck whole country should subsidise already rich London in such a way? This is free market as you say, so taxpayers should not be picking up the tab for improvements that will only be used by a handful of people who work in the city.

There is no alernative IMHO - it's not wise to have such a big concentration of businesses in one place, costs will always be high and there is no way to solve problems with congestion because extra capacity will be used up.

So how do you propose "forcing" businesses to move? You would probably need Stalin to resurrect himself.

        Incentives.

Introduce the congestion charge for people who walk.

Tax the very life out of everyone who works in London.

Tax - gradual increase in business rates in London with a sharp decrease in rates just outside of M25. I don't propose those business to go to Scotland, Wales or even Birmingham - just push them outside of M25 so that those commuters who travel to London from outside of M25 won't have to. Naturally some londoners will be unhappy, but they should sit down and think a bit about the plague and great London fire and chill the **** out: if they love London so much they should become tourist guides there or travel to M25 for work.

What an incredibly stupid thing to say. Do you really think that anyone is concerned with fire and plague risks in London???

I think you'll find that actually London generates a hell of a lot more wealth, and tax from that wealth, than get's spent back in London. If we say roughly 25% of the UK tax payers live in the greater London area then I'd say that's a significant amount of tax payers justifying that kind of spending.

Why won't you say 50% or even 110% then? If you pull numbers from air you might as well go for bigger ones.

Crossrail link should be paid exclusively by Londoners via council tax or maybe even special income tax - it is waste of taxpayers money to have whole of UK fund London for this thing that does not solve the problem, only delay them - Scotland meanwhile is laughing all the way to the bank showing that taxpayers actually care more about free prescriptions, free eduction than anything else - you don't see Glasgow doing similar Crossrail link, they evidently found some other more important for taxpayers areas that they need to put these money into.

                    UK Population (2006) = 60,587,300
                    Greater London Population (2001 - I imagine it's gone up) = 13,945,000

                    How's that?
