Maybe you should ask Ferrari and while you are there, tell them they are not making sports cars, because they think they do.
I know that 4wd improves grip over rear wheel drive.

But for me the fun starts just there where the grip ends. Driving relatively slow with great feed back about what goes on and being in full control of the grip/slip is my kind of fun.

I will not go to Ferrari. They suck, cheat and do not behave in a sporting manner.

I agree but think saying that a sports car has to be rear wheel drive is wrong. There are many cars that are classed as sports cars that are not rear wheel drive.

I actually prefer rear wheel drive myself....

          But who does the classification?

The manufacturer, who wants a sporty car in his lineup. Or a motor journalist which does not want to write anything bad about the cars in fear of not getting invited to the next launch party in Dubai.

I believe that a car that is designed as a sports car from the beginning is rear wheel drive.

A Citroen Saxo VTS GTI Turbo XI 1,6 16v with a chav bodykit or whatever does not become a sports car just because writes it in their marketing material.

So why are we arguing/discussing again?

Personally (I know I'll get grief for this) I like the Merc SL. It has everything I like in cars. Some class, comfort, speed, ability, folding metal top, rear wheel drive. The SL 55 AMG is probably the ideal model.

Don't see many chavs in one and it has been built from the ground up to be a sports car (a lardy one I know, but I'm past bone shaking lightweights now).

                    Never arguing, just discussing vigourously!!!

The sports car definition is vague. There is no clear definition and I agree about the Saxo thing. A sports car can be designed as a sports car without having rear wheel drive though. The 2006 Lambo Gallardo was a sports car, although possibly described as a supercar. This was AWD.

I agree, the early, traditional view was rear wheel drive, but technology moved on a lot. These guys describe it pretty well.

I also believe the Murcielago was 4WD or AWD.

                      Then go for it.
It is most likely a very nice car to drive.

Only do not miss the irony of the L meaing Leicht(Light).
