It'll warm them up a treat to recall how bleedin' mindless they were when they were led by their now frost-bitten noses by the Daily Express, The Mail, and even (bleuurrgghh!!) The Mirror. And the Labour party, under the crap, spineless leadership of Tory-wannabe twonk Kinnock. Feck 'em.
Coal is the worst fuel for carbon emissions. Dirty, dirty, dirty.

Now then! UK coal is among the best quality on the planet. And modern burning techniques make it a viable fuel - google for the details. Also, there are no controls over how Brazil/wherever mines the coal that they then ship to us (once again, burning fuel to transport it!), so who knows the conditions that their miners work in, and who knows how much pollution is generated to get it out of the ground, etc. The sad truth is that the cost of reopening the UK mines, getting folk back to the pit areas (because many are now ghost towns) and so on is now just not affordable. So we lose out every time we burn another tonne of coal from abroad. Ingenious.

Then Arthus Scargill and his cohorts, instead of using the miners as useful idiots that he could use to fight his ideological battle with Thatcher, maybe he should have devised a strategey whereby we could have been persuaded that keeping mining was in the best interests of the UK.

Strange, I find myself agreeing with you a touch more than I'm comfortable with these days. Ach well, we can always resort to the old welfare state debate to sort things out ...

It is worrying snaw. In fact it is beginning to be rather common. Maybe we have just learnt from each other

After 20 years, now that nearly all ex-mining families are doing something else, how many people would want to return to the mines? I've heard it was a horrible job, and a bit dangerous too.

Ah, the answer has just hit me in a flash...

Actually most of the experienced ones are retired, probably visiting hospital frequently with dodgy lung diseases. They're the ones that are important since they knew all the safety stuff etc, though maybe I'm underestimating the younger ones.

I reckon quite a few would jump at the chance to work in the mines again - might have been hard but they were fiercly proud of what they did and that pride was reflected in the communities they lived in. When that went what you have left is what you see now; crime, drugs, unemployment and a whole lot of dispair.

Then again maybe they're/I'm just being sentimental.
