Have to disagree - he played right into her hands and if we're measuring his political skills I'd rate him way way down the pile. I say that as someone with first hand experience of the miners strike, I reckon he made an unwinnable strike a hell of a lot worse and where I come from he's not remembered very fondly.

Notts, is it? The verminous slime.

[EDIT] Unwinnable? Nope. But I don't think anyone expected the State to be quite so violent. e.g. Orgreave.

The Government was pretty heavy-handed over the Poll Tax demo., too. Knew a few people who got caught up in it, and were either battered by the police, or saw something similar. Bet it'd be no different today.

Agreed. But I think he was just too tired of leading.

Tee hee. Next time anyone old whinges about sky-high fuel bills I hope someone reminds them that we've got feckin' LOADS of lovely, super-high quality coal no longer being mined, that could be keeping them warm cheaply, and keeping British folk in work. It'll warm them up a treat to recall how bleedin' mindless they were when they were led by their now frost-bitten noses by the Daily Express, The Mail, and even (bleuurrgghh!!) The Mirror. And the Labour party, under the crap, spineless leadership of Tory-wannabe twonk Kinnock. Feck 'em.
