I once had great fun with a scheduler for a simulator. It was supposed to kick off different chunks of code 20 times a second, 10 times a second and so on. I was able to see how long each chunk was taking and how the whole scheduler was behaving. Was able to improve the scheduler based on the visual cues provided.

Yup, it's a great way to see what's going on.

When I used to write computer games I used to change the background colour at the start and end of chunks of code so that I could see how long they took.
