I was ready to go all indignant and cry "Tory whore!", but, there is something to what you say.

The big problem is providing for those who NEED help, and ensuring it's first rate, without:

    1. Funding a nice easy way out of real life, at others' expense, for the lazy gits of the world.

    2. Tempting ordinary folk into a life of watching Jeremy Kyle, because Society all but said to them, "You're finished".

Heffer probably dug out his Jamie Bulger piece from the early 90s changed the names, and blamed Labour this time instead of Michael Howard
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

This will serve them better than a couple of call centres in a business park adjoining a new town. "

Surprisingly there are loads of Telegraph readers who are wise enough to agree that Thatcher's policies had a large part to play in what we are seeing today.

The Tories have not got a clue on how to deal with the underclass (and I do not claim to be a Tory). The answer is simple: Education the poorer the community the more should be spent on smaller classes, sport and music. Build boarding schools even and give people choice about where they can send their children. Where parents are disfunctional pass those choices to social workers or responsible members of their families. why is it that the brighter your child the better the quality of education. rubbish, schools should not be judged according to exam results but according to how they bring the best out of children.. there is no discussion as to how this should be measured or achieved.

For kids who are disruptive then send them to specialist schools that concentrate harder on discipline whilst providing even better facilities and smaller class sizes.

For the current crop of underclass then they should be offered training and made to work .. no matter what job they do, for any payment they receive. Single mothers should be offered home in working communes (er.. workhouses)
where they can work and share childcare responsibilities with opportunities to train for jobs that would enable them to move out into their own homes and thus compete on even terms with the rest of us. You may scoff but these people are as capable as you and I of prospering.

The truth is that the existence of an underclass is vital to socialists like Polly Toynbee. without it they would have no logical or moral high ground to from which to bash the rich. They would have to justify tax in terms of return on investment rather than manipulation through guilt. The entire welfare industry employs thousands of labour supporters, who themselves are trapped as if they were dependents themselves. Few of these people could hold a job in a competitive customer focussed environment. The Guardian would go out of business tomorrow if it didnt have all those public sector jobs to advertise.

We've had this conversation already. Perhaps you should check your facts.

Citroen-Peugeot and Renault are world class in anyone's book. Renault basically owns Nissan. They employ 1000s and make a profit. Beats Morgan and TVR I think you'll agree.

Aviation - Airbus is pan European.
France also has the capability to make it's own fighters and luxury business aircraft, Dassault and Mirage. We lost this capability in the 70s, although I agree we still lead in large jet engines.

Speaking of logic wasn't it you who said the UK was the worst place to live.
