I agree with Wendigo and MrRobin, and appreciate the veterans sticking around - their posts are the most effective way of restoring order and quality, more effective than moderation.
Peer pressure is a great leveller, we've just swung the way of the 'loon' lately, bring in the old guard and mock the pillocks instead of engaging with them.
This can happen as overnight as the degradation did - it's like a party:
We have the beardy UNIX geeks in the corner discussing the relative merits of rm rf *; The cool dudes (circa 1975) in their cool dude Star Wars T-Shirts, talking about buffy, and giving a learned nod to the UNIX geeks; The middle managers pretending to be smarter, richer and fitter than each other, progressively getting louder and more aggressive in the middle of the room; The public school boys & girls by the drinks cabinet, sneering at the middle managers while mirroring their behaviour; The insecure man-children hovering near the cool dudes attempting to speak Geek and speaking Greek instead, while giggling and making jokes about any ladies present... and the normal, average folks, looking around at the party, scared, confused and convinced the whole thing has gone to pot.
