I remember reading them and I thought the books were great when i was a nipper. I never made a connection between gollywogs and black people either. What the PC morons fail to realise is that skin tone is not something that children are generally speaking that aware of until they get older and adults start sticking thoughts about skin colour into thier heads.
I remember being a young boy and going down to the pakki shop to buy popadums for my grandmother. Everybody in the village knew the place as the pakki shop, we all went in and spent money in there and got a wonderful service from a very nice man and none of us meant pakki in a derogatory or evil way. If that had been today we would have all been strung up from the rafters and branded as evil racist scum not worthy of living in society...
A lot of the words and images (i.e. gollywogs) that are seen as evil today were perfectly innocent 25 years ago, is this the fault of the racists or the PC morons who keep banning words that could be seen as offensive before anybody has complained about them...
I remember watching a TV program where a black man was beinf told of by a PC teacher because he said his son was black. She was giving him a damn good ticking off telling him that he should be calling his son coloured because calling his son black was racist and demeaning..... PC gone mad
