Britain could reduce its carbon emissions to zero over the next 20 years – but it would mean no flying, an annual carbon allowance for all and a diet almost without meat or milk, a report said.
The findings by the Centre for Alternative Technology in west Wales go further than any other scientific body or environmental group by suggesting that Britain could cut its energy use by 50 per cent by 2027 and supply this entirely by wind and wave power.
All road transport would be electric and lorries would double up by using their engines to generate power for the National Grid when they were not being used.
Battery power and pumped water storage for hydro schemes would be used to iron out supply fluctuations when the wind did not blow.
The authors rule out nuclear power because of the terrorist threat.
Industry would have to bid at auction for permits to use fossil fuels, as these were gradually phased out. Individuals would have carbon accounts, with those in credit able to trade their surplus and those without enough having to buy more credits.
Meat and dairy would have to go because all the grazing land would disappear under trees & no cheap foreign holidays
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

More trees, more squirrels, slurp, Tasty. Pigeons, mouth watering, Rabbit stew.
Only you city bred types would really suffer with that one.
In wales we still hunt.
Must kill furry defenceless animals!!! stop it! take tablet
And I can Sail where I go on Holiday.
I get irritated by rich pop stars telling the rest of us to tighten our belts and save the world.
You're going to get a bit more than irritated when the rest of us don't tighten our belts and save the world. And seeing as even the presenters of Live Earth seemed sceptical, or simply didn't appear to have a clue what it was all about in the first place, then I kind of doubt that any belt tightening will be happening round here in the near future, so prepare to be a bit more than irritated I would say.

What would be the trigger event to make you modify your behaviour?

How would this actually help?
With a power station you have a single point to monitor and reduce emissions at, wouldn't millions of lorries sat hooked up to the Grid idling away create more than they save?

Floods & plagues of biblical proportions?
Not quite there yet but has anybody been watching the news?
Flooding in mid summer?
Increased solar radiation through ozone depletion?
I would say that some people need to pull their head out of the sand, but at the rate of increase in world desertification that may soon be impossible.

Indeed. Then you tell me - what action did Madonna tell me to take? She wasn't very specific.

I'm not sure that the ozone layer is a greenhouse factor.
But anyway, who is responsible for changing attitudes, or promoting lower-carbon technology? The government?
How seriously can you take a government that made a universally-acknowledged buffoon called Prescott responsible for environmental policy?
Furthermore, whatever the government tells us about the environment, no-one believes a thing they say any more!
Live Earth was shameless self promotion under cover of a noble cause that people will pay lip service to and forget the next day.
Bob Geldof .. right now .. is he and his spoilt brat, media attention seeking sprogs a reflection of self sacrifice and nobility to help the world's problems ? ... no he isn't, no they aren't. He used Live Aid to boost himself and his flagging music career, ok Live Aid did alot of good but you can see the devious / blind (almost self bullsh*tting) ambition that drives these people.
(Having said that he has been on the telly being very anti-Euro with regards to Britain's sovereignty and the English Pound .. so credit to him).
Why worry about future generations and their environment when we are all dead and long gone .. let them sort it out; no one gives a sh*t about their fellow man in the present .. so why bother.
