Tell me what other places than the City, Unis, Pharma companies would actively encourage and prefer PhDs in exact sciences, who else needs those PhDs in this country?

I must know nowt too Sas as I think Alexey made a pretty good summation of what goes on

It is pretty weak of you to be so critical of Alexey's excellent English.

Even Academia is going away from exact sciences - physics, chemistry, mathematics - who needs them when culture of students is to go for media studies because this is the least effort so that they can drink and shag through their years in Uni?

UK makes wings for 380s, so some win here too, but frankly it is France and Germany that push Airbus and to be fair they made it 2nd force in the world that would otherwise be dominated by Boeing.

Trains are also much faster in France I hear - and Japan too. Just why the fk can't it happen in the UK? Terrain here is such that high speed trains going through such a densely populated country is an obvious choice - surely if nuked Japan could make it with all their earthquakes then UK can too? That's something one could be proud of much more than bloody City types.
