gooner, as you might know I am planning/dreaming to buy such a vehicle sometime in the next twelve months should I have enough dosh
I would love a landrover product, from the patriotic perspective and also because I have always liked them, however, no matter how much I keep think to get one, I am put off by the poor engineering workmanship and reliability records - gearboxes and engines.
The volvo maybe a little higher than your intended budget, but if it is more reliable then will it not balance out in the end ? not to mention the occasional 6th and 7th seats in the volvo are real forward facing seats as opposed to the ones in the disco
I don't care what anybody says about the selfishness of 4x4's, nobody can deny the higher driving position is safer than a saloon car, having owned a 4x4 skoda for the last 3 years everytime it rains I see the benefit of the grip from the 4x4, no wheel spinning at traffic lights, and not to mention the safety in winter time, I've climbed steep snowy hills on summer tyres with the 4x4
I have to say, to the anti 4x4 brigade, it's like anything in life, if you cannot afford it then it's tough, if you can't afford 1st class safety then get a better job
as has been mentioned before it's the majority of saloon cars that should be made greener, not simply the easy way out picking on the small percentage of 4x4's

Hi Gooner,
granted the Volvo does not have hi and lo box's, diff locks etc, but as I have learn't with my Skoda (which has the same haldex clutch design as the volvo and only one range of gears) there are not many places where the skoda will get stuck with it's 4x4 system.
And yes I go across fields with it and the best test it is the snow, driving to the mountains going up the snow covered roads and over taking other cars and the grip is awesome
But how often do any of us really need hi and lo range and diff locks ? unless we are really doing muddy hill farming work and descending precarios slopes or climbing up rocks do we really need the low range, I know somebody who's only ever used low range on his range rover when pulling a trailer and the combined weight has been over 9 tons and the thing simply wouldn't pull away in the high range gears !!
I've watched clarkson's tests of the new range rover in the US climbing mountains, and nobody can deny the offroad ability is formidable, however how often would really put our own 'main' vehicle through such conditions and extreme torment, and if you simply want to get across fields and through muddy tracks to the location of a shoot a single range gearbox and haldex clutch will be enough in my opinion
you see what I mean ?
no matter how much I love landrovers and would love to own one, I am drawn to the volvo and I refuse to buy japanese - at least we can have some standards whereby our vehicular purchases are putting food on the tables of European based workers
