Germany was bankrupt with rampant inflation before the National Sociaists took over

No country could match the German military machine

So your question could be rephrased, was Germany a better country once the National Socialists took over ?

I don't know where this myth crops up from about the German war machine and their military might. I have watched a number of programs which debunk this myth. From what I can tell the Germans were totally inept and a fair proportion seemed to have homo tendencies. As for the Gestapo (sp?) they were not this feared organisation either. Yes they often made references to people being taken out and shot, but I doubt they ever really did it. Much of the programme I saw seemed to involve a the occupants of a small French town and how the resistance seemed to run rings around the hapless Germans. Indeed the local cafe owner and a big player in the local resistance movement seemed more concerned with having a bit of a grope with his waitresses rather than what the Germans would do to him. What was interesting was how poor the UK secret service was in these times. They placed a policeman into the village who managed to mis-pronounce pretty much every second word.
