Nationwide Building Society House Price Index April 2024

    Key points:
    • UK house prices fell 0.4% month on month in April
    • Annual rate of change slowed to 0.6%, from 1.6% in March
There is an interesting section on why first time buyers are currently holding back as they feel that mortgages are too expensive currently as well as the associated costs.
Amongst other things, this has led to some calls within the industry such as Coventry Building Society to reform stamp duty as residential property transactions have slumped to a four year low in the first quarter of 2024.

Maybe the house prices themselves are too expensive? But propping up the housing market is the government's main priority so they'd never allow a major slump to happen.
