I saw that in The Torygraph late yesterday.

He's not sacked but his contract won't be renewed in April and he's not being asked to do any work until then. (I worked for a client who did that to a provider.)

it is rather tasteless (shylock was a character to be despised for his Jewish-ness, whether Shakespeare actually agreed with anti Semitism is still under discussion) and considering the difficult situation the comic was foolish.
