    Many moons ago, when I had a permie job, one of the chaps who worked at the company was doing some work on the side - for the company! He registered as self-employed and put the extra income on his SATR rather than through the payroll. Technically, it should have been put through the payroll but some agreement was come to with the Finance Director which I suspect meant that there was a fiddle going on as the FD had a bit of a reputation for creative accounting.
