Monday Links from the Gap Between Teams Meetings vol. DCLIX

Sorry, yes, late again. Far too busy at the moment
    • In search of the lost “Greek” tribe of Alexander the Great - ”One hundred and twenty-seven years ago, a mysterious Afghan pagan tribe, the Kalash, fled Islamic religious persecution to three secretive valleys in a remote corner of what is now north-western Pakistan… The Kalash, rarely visited by outsiders, claimed descent from Alexander the Great’s troops who had campaigned through their Hindu Kush homeland. In their refuge, they were said to still practice a similar culture and religion to that of ancient Greece, even worshipping Zeus as their paramount god.” Paul Raffaele visits the remote and much-persecuted tribe.
    • Particle Physicists Puzzle Over a New Duality - ”A hidden link has been found between two seemingly unrelated particle collision outcomes. It’s the latest example of a mysterious web of mathematical connections between disparate theories of physics.” Yes, but can it get us back on the nice timeline?
    • The Mystery of ‘Harriet Cole’ - ”In 19th-century Philadelphia, an anatomist dissected and mounted a human nervous system. Now researchers are trying to figure out whose remains are stretched out in a glass case.”
    • Buy and Shell: Inside the Battle for Faberge’s Eggs - ”Once sought after by old money in search of enchantment, the bejewelled eggs and stone-carved animals once favoured by the Romanovs have been absorbed into the legal battles and personal feuds of Russia’s energy and tech tycoons. In the background, though, still hums a venerable network of dealers and hobbyists who make a living from the exacting work of proving that a piece of jewellery is the real deal.” Nice to have, but I'm not sure they're essential
    • Chronotrains - ”How far can you go by train in 5h?” Nice interactive map, but it's worth bearing in mind the site's assumption that the trains in the UK run on time, or at all come to that
    • How to Befriend Crows and Turn Them Against Your Enemies - ”Crows are intelligent, self-sufficient animals… Most importantly of all, crows can recognize human faces. They will come to recognize my face as that of their master.” I'm not sure Stephen Johnson will succeed in his nefarious plan, but all the good stuff about crows in here is true
    • North Korea’s monster fake out - ”North Korea put itself back on the world’s center stage by announcing that it had successfully launched a long-range ballistic missile called the Hwasong-17, capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads all the way to the continental U.S.… The only trouble is, it may not have happened that way.” Looks like they've been rumbled
    • Between a Rock and a Hard Place: The Precarious State of a Double Agent during the Cold War - An academic paper examining the reality behind the spy stories: ”The main source of this research consists of original, in-depth oral history interviews with former double agent ‘M.’ He operated from the 1960s through the 1990s for the Dutch Security Service and the Central Intelligence Agency against the East German Ministerium für Staatssicherheit. The article analyzes the varying degrees of appreciation that these services showed for his work, and it investigates their consequences on the psychological well-being of the double agent.”
    • Cinetimes - ”Welcome to Cinetimes. Start watching free movies from YouTube, Archive.org, DailyMotion and Vimeo with a Netflix like interface.” A good way to find free films
    • Magical Trash - Of course there’s a website devoted to the rubbish bins of Disney theme parks; and this is it. The one pictured below is at Disneyland Paris: ”Star Tours trash cans at Disneyland Paris embrace a multi-shade blue motif, along with Paris’ customary non-themed inlet flaps.”

    Happy invoicing!
