For the people who don't know, Fleetwood was a regular poster on this board and its previous incarnation. He took great pleasure in correcting member spelling and grammar, myself being a regular victim (mainly under my old site name). He was however more than a spelling pedant, he had a pretty good sense of humour and was one of the more pervy members, many of the posts he contributed to ending up in 'light relief' infact I think one of his posts was the first to be secretly dropped there by admin (can almost imagine them cleaning their virtual hands afterward). Fleetwood died recently in a car crash. This idea has nothing to do with alienating new members, but more celebrating a 'cyber pal'.

The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Therefore, I feel that a memorial site is a bit OOT as a result. What if someone else on the forum dies at some stage (god forbid), does that mean they too have a site in their name?

I think it's more fitting to remember the anniversary of his death - perhaps have a meet up and drink to honour his memory and to keep the original thread up on the General site for another month or so. Perhaps reminder threads on the anniversary of his death too.

Not everyone of here knew him well either, which was my other reason. No one who knew him is going to forget him.

It's also the approach taken by other forums I've been on whereby someone has tragically died.

Sorry, but that's how I feel. Certainly nothing personal and I fully respect that others won't share my view.

However I wanted to brave enough to give my reason.
No. I wouldn't flame you for having your opinion. I just wondered why. Sometimes people just do stuff to be contrary without any foundation. Personally I think renaming light relief is only a small thing and appropriate in this case, all IMHO

That's why I was seeking feedback, maybe Jenever can answer that?

            No.

Not to put too fine a point on it, suppose someone else dies in a years time? Do we rename General?

And much as everyone misses Fleetwood, was he any more or less missable than some of the others on here? Are we making a judgement here?

            Let's not get carried away.

However, I'd back a new Fleetwood smiley, to use when correcting someones grammar or spelling.

I agree. I think a smiley would be much more appropriate.

I can only think of a handful of posters who have been on here as long as me and Fleetwood was one and would be more than happy for it to be renamed.

As Denny points out though he wasnt an owner of the site, but then again Denny probably doesnt know who was whereas Fleetwood did.
What happens in General, stays in General.

I was really in two minds about my original post as most here only knew Daniel as a poster on a bulletin board, and I thought it could be a bit over the top. But having seen the replies and genuine response to to the passing of one of the more prominent members of this community I am glad I did.

That said I believe it is a bit much to rename a part of the site after someone who will not be known to future members, was not a founder of the site, and as Denny says, what happens, when inevitably, someone else passes on?

(He would however love it, and my suggestion would be Fleetwood's Light Relief)

What I feel is sad is that a thread which contains so much genuine feeling and emotion should sink forever from the forum.

There have been a few threads over the years (I joined the original board), which it would have been nice to have saved in perpetuity; not just the sad, but the acerbic pF, nedprod, Mr Rees etc. Is it not possible to have an archive of those we vote worthy to keep in perpetuity?

Names anyone? The vault? The Best Of? Forever Sticky? Not So Fleeting?

                    1. Rename "Light relief" as suggested (it ought to include Fleetwood's name and an apostrophy (sp?) - correctly or incorrectly placed.

                    2. Fleetwood's tribute thread left sticky there for anyone new to read: new people might not have known him, but that will be the chance for them to learn.

                    3. People who are bothered by what else will be renamed in if or when scenarios should focus on being the kind of person whose disappearance would be as big loss as that of Fleety's: denying small tribute like this under pretense that lots more will need to be done in the future is abhorrent - if such a great person like Fleetwood passes away so tragically then some small appreciation should be found.

This is a tragic situation that makes me personally very sad so I don't want to enter any debates on this subject: the decision is obvious to me, and if someone who knew him in real life states that he would have loved it then this is all that matters to me.
