Are you surprised?? There have been numerous threads on here over the past 20 years with some of the regulars wistfully asking what it takes to retire early (and these days that’s 60, not 55).

You should be ok though, because with a lobotomy you'll be able to continue successful career of a VB6 programmer...

I am surprised you did not get my joke, but then again if you did I'd probably get banned for it ...

My aim is to learn to do something else outside of IT that will pay enough to for the water and electric.

MF might actually be onto something you know...

Easy over last 30 years. Remember I'm not talking about the next 30 years, this thread is about those thinking about their retirement soon.

You might be lucky, but pulling the hours, learning all the new stuff, and taking on the challenges of IT loses its appeal very rapidly, and you gotta have an exit plan, trust me.

It ain't no fun in IT and it certainly ain't no fun old and knackered in IT.
The construction industry is very much the same , most trade are agency jobs rather the perm unless your office based, but the swamp of HSE document related tasks to complete aswell as constant IET wiring reg changes every 3 years is not enjoyable , I think each industry is based in it's own merits , it's tougher now than when I started off in 1995

I don’t think being a caterer in Concorde Room T5 would suit you…

You can't make money in the stock market, blah. Well take a look, it's pretty damned easy, just buy something that's made money since some time ago.
