Monday Links from the Lockdown vol. DXCIV

Another busy Monday here, but just got time to post this lot
    • That Time Hitler’s Girlfriend Visited Iceland and the British Invaded - The home of great jumpers had quite a varied time from 1939 to 1945: ”The British consul arrived with his suitcase in tow, a clear indicator of the nationality of the incoming troops… The consul, according to witnesses, tapped the shoulder of a policeman standing in the middle of the crowd and asked, ‘Would you mind getting the crowd to stand back a bit so that the soldiers can get off the destroyer?’ The policeman, whose job description likely did not require him to help foreign invaders, just nodded: ‘Certainly.’”
    • Secret Ingredient Found to Power Supernovas - ”Three-dimensional supernova simulations have solved the mystery of why they explode at all.” Better to simulate them than have one going off next door
    • Piles of ancient poop reveal ‘extinction event’ in human gut bacteria - ”In a study published today in Nature, researchers analyzed ancient DNA from coprolites, or preserved feces, found at the back of rock shelters in Utah and Mexico… They suggest that over the past millennium, the human gut has experienced an ‘extinction event,’ losing dozens of species and becoming significantly less diverse.” So you may not even be equipped to digest that “paleo diet”
    • If Necessary, Mars Rover Curiosity Could Rip Its Own Wheels Off to Stay Mobile - ”Curiosity's wheel wear shouldn't be a problem for years, but if things get bad, JPL has a plan to minimize risk with a ‘wheel shedding’ maneuver”. Graceful degradation
    • UFO Sightings Map - ”This map shows reports of UFO sightings in the United States, with historic UFO sightings symbolized in yellow, and featured in the Historical Reports widget… The dataset contains over 80,000 records of UFO sightings over the past century (between 1910 and 2014).”
    • Queens of Infamy: Boudicca - ”Her tawny hair fell in a “great mass” to her hips. She was dressed in a colorful tunic and cloak, her outfit completed by a giant ****-off gold torc. Her voice was harsh, unfeminine… She was a bloodthirsty barbarian, devoted to a ghoulish religion, out to destroy the social order of the known world.” Well, that’s what the Romans said, but they were biased
    • Scuba Diving through Slovakia's Enchanting Opal Mines - ”There's a dive site hidden in the heart of Slovakia that boasts the beauty of the gems it produces.” Sounds nice, if you like diving
    • Neural implant lets paralyzed person type by imagining writing - ”This week, the academic community provided a rather impressive example of the promise of neural implants. Using an implant, a paralyzed individual managed to type out roughly 90 characters per minute simply by imagining that he was writing those characters out by hand.”
    • Surprise! A new motorway - ”New motorways don't come along very often… For reasons known only to themselves, North Lincolnshire Council's highways department have decided that the orphaned section of M181 north of the roundabout will stay a motorway, but will now have its own number. New signs have gone up indicating that it is now, officially, the A1077(M).”
    • Celebrating 18 Years of Paul Talling's Derelict London Website 2003 - 2021 - ”On an early spring morning in 2003 after a heavy night of clubbing I witnessed the demolition of an abandoned candle factory in south London and realised how much in London was quietly rotting away and not being recorded. I set off with my camera on all-day walks within the M25 area and set up the website which to my surprise soon became popular due to media coverage beyond my wildest dreams.” This typewriter was found in Deptford Creek in 2009

    Happy invoicing!
