“The £2.6 million renovation of Downing Street’s new White House-style press briefing room was carried out by a Russian-owned company.
The first images of the room in 9 Downing Street emerged yesterday, showing it kitted out with blue panelling, four Union flags and a lectern labelled: “Downing Street.” In the corner of one image, leaked to ITV News, a Henry vacuum cleaner was seen.
Rachel Reeves, the shadow Cabinet Office minister, said: “Given how much money Boris Johnson has thrown at his latest vanity project, we were expecting something a bit more impressive.”
HuffPost reported that the renovations were carried out by Megahertz, which is owned by a Moscow-based firm that has carried out technical work for Russia Today, a state-controlled broadcaster. The company’s work included installing computers, cameras, microphones and a control desk. It is not suggested that Megahertz or Okno-TV, its parent company, is under the influence of the Russian government.”
