I think there are some contracting type companies that "sponsor" you i.e they will sponsor your visa to be in Oz and officially be your employer however you have to find your own contracts etc but I suspect they will take a cut of your earnings (and that's after the cut the recruitment agent has taken).

I'm not sure how it all works tho so don't quote me on it!

I'm just going for a straight forward independent skilled migration visa. it's not the cheapest or quickest way to do things. if you're under 30 you can get a working holiday visa which will entitle you to stay in Oz for 12 months and work at any one place for 6months max.
Thanks unfortunately am not under 30 - though when I did my undergrad degree in Geology (a while ago) loads of my class mates went to OZ to work on the mines, they used the working holiday visa option, they just took a flight and turned up on the doors of mining companies, they all loved it, but because its mining work they were based no where near any civilisation !

Hmmm I never applied for these jobs advertised on jobserve, but from what you say it seems they are directed at Oz visa holders only

            Sandy,

there is a real 'catch-22' situation. You will find it difficult to get a contract unless you have a visa and it's hard to get a visa unless you have a formal offer.

The options are: start the emigration process like Janey or bite the bullet & go permie with a transnational. Then get yourself transferred to Oz. A stay of up to 4 years is fairly easy to arrange this way.
I'm not so think as you drunk I am...

I was a permie in 2 transnational (2 of the big 4 consultancies) and transfer does not work, we were told we'd have to resign from one region and re apply to another. Applying to work on projects in somewhere so far is rarely done cuz its so expensive for the other region to have you on board (this is apart from the middle east region, they are even cheaper than Indians - I know some English guys who their HQ is Dubai but they are always working on projects in the UK )

Probably because Essex is not very south-west. Neither is Brighton for that matter....
