Windows NT was based on OS2 when IBM & Microsoft ended their partnership. they both had a kernel . The interface for NT was like win 3.x.
95 & ME wore the same makeup as NT4 but it was windows 3 task switching underneath.
NT 3.5-4 were the first stable windows with a kernel. Win 2000 brought most of the benefits of NT to end users.
Microsoft won because the cost of a PC + NT cost less than a copy of OS/2 , SCO etc. It was about £1000 all in the mid 90s.
Linux & most Unix had X11 and a window manager which was the same on the client machine. It didn't take off as it was difficult to manage and cost a few thousand for a version with commercial support.
In my opinion Windows NT was the first stable and windows 2000 first decent client. Server 20XX and Win 10 is far more stable.Last edited by vetran; 25 August 2020, 11:56.Comment

Yes, if my memory serves me correctly it relied on MVS as the core.
