During the second world war the biggest threat to Britain was the German U-boats stopping shipping bringing in essential goods.
No way Britain can become self sufficient.I'm alright JackComment

Lets say Britain did become self-sufficient, then the Unions in different sectors would regularly hold the country to ransome with strikes. Then you'll see cries for more globalisation.I'm alright JackComment

Britain can, as long as the Germans don't bring their U-boats out of retirement.Originally posted by BlasterBates View PostDuring the second world war the biggest threat to Britain was the German U-boats stopping shipping bringing in essential goods.

So why do you need air freight or shipping if the country is "self-sufficient" ?Originally posted by Mordac View PostBritain can, as long as the Germans don't bring their U-boats out of retirement.

It never ceases to amaze me how IT contractors earning high salaries because they're serving international clients, crave for "national self-sufficiency".
Are they prepared to give up their job to work in a textile factory or pick fruit for the good of the nation.I'm alright JackComment

I was being ironic. I accept that Britain will never be self-sufficient while farming land is worth far more as building land, or as a solar farm. We will always need to import food, and anything the Chinese can make more cheaply (which is almost everything else).Originally posted by BlasterBates View PostSo why do you need air freight or shipping if the country is "self-sufficient" ?His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...Comment
