    More anti motorist government (Welsh Assembly) rhetoric

    The business and economic case for an M4 relief road around Newport seemed to be very strong. However, the WA decided not to proceed on the basis that the damage to the environment was too great. OK. But now today as an alternative, the advisors to the WA have proposed that a permanent 50 mph speed limit around Newport, backed up by average speed cameras, is the way to counter the congestion. With the advent of increased traffic as a result of Severn bridge tolls being abolished, we now have a proposal for reduced speed limits. Average speed cameras bring in revenue you see, whilst building a relief road doesn't. Forgive me for being cynical!

            You should try being from Pembrokeshire...

            Thing about average speed camera is that they actually work, the ones on the M25 and M40 have certainly kept things moving, if not very quickly (or as quickly as some might prefer...). The real problem with Newport is the eastern approach to the Brynglas tunnel. Smoothing the traffic there will help.

              Wasn't there a chief constable in North Wales who advocated a zero tolerance towards motorists, whilst advocating legalising some drugs?

              The A55 is a bit unusual, it's effectively a dual carriageway with motorway regulations.

                the roads West of Carmarthen have been vastly improved over the years and are a delight to drive on. There are only a few parts on the St. Clears to Tenby and Haverfordwest which still need improvement. But none the less, what's there is very pleasant.

                  Go past Haverfordwest though and it's dismal, even to the ferry ports. But the problem with my home county is 50-odd years of zero investment despite the vast fortunes paid into the economy by the five major refineries. The local council has a lot to answer for.

                    The WA decided to implement a 50mph limit on the A483 after they found high levels of Nox next to new housing estate built right by the dual carriageway. This also coincided with the opening of a costa drive through, and also planning for another new estate the other side.
