Just got an email to say that I can have a new Second Generation Smart Meter installed, are they still crap or are they actually worth it now?

Just there so they can introduce variable price. I.e. more expensive at peak times.

I’ll refuse until they (inevitably) make it compulsory.

crap, the only benefit is for the supplier (apart from meter readings, but how hard is that?)

and they're hackable, and their computer can have a divide by zero moment and cut your supply.

but, hey - wonderful they are.
        have one you must.

It's absolutely vital that everyone can watch their money drain away in real time. Far better than telling them that gas is much cheaper to use than electric, or fitting cheap door seals.

We got one of the very first ones. the display failed a few years ago, after about a year I called and asked to get a new one mailed out.

"Oh no sir, you had the first generation, we have to change the meters now"

So they came round for about 2 hours to do that and I have probably have looked at the new one twice.

This is a 10 billion quid project and nobody sat down at the start and tried to work out a future proof messaging protocol between the console and meter. Honest to f...

Anyway, to answer the question, I don't think there is a difference.
