They also changed thier website recently to say that current SC status should not be a factor when applying for a job. Previously the should wasn't there.
To me this just proves that they don't really care and they are not going to police it because it is too much hassle. If you don't have SC good luck finding somebody willing to sponsor you, 99% of SC jobs are going to be unavailable for you.
I'm also in the group of people who have previously had SC but it has now run out and nobody is willing to give me the time of day for SC contracts.Comment

Who loses out - good contractors, obviously, but the projects do to. It's like McClaren only allowed to pick the England team from Arsenal, Watford and Charlton.Comment

Have you ever considered about lying.
Tell them you have SC clearance and then when they ask for a reference tell them that its lapsed...to discount you would be grounds to sue.Comment

Now there is a TA unit that has a very small commitment time (circa ~7 days a year) but to join you have to be an IT specialist.
They are on standby to call out to anywhere in the world (all TA mobilisations are still voluntary) but you could get your SC through that.
No parades on tuesday night, no 2 week camp. More skills on the CV..

Not to good when they send you to Iraq though!
DaveP: As Mal stated it is a bad situation, the only people that can change this are the government. I was cleared, it expired, got turfed out of the gig becuase I didn't have it but the company decided to put me through it anyway as it would be an asset to have people cleared that live in the area.
I now have DV and others, but the problem still exsists. When applying for the jobs if you don't get good feedback from the agent, try informing the DVA, assuming you are happy that you have the skills and experience to do the job.Comment
