Not exactly sure how the death penalty worked, but I seem to remember that it was mandatory for murder, which is why Ruth Ellis was hanged. If it were left to the judge to decide whether or not to use it, that might work. However, what we have now is a farce. Life imprisonment for murder can be as little as 12 years and an offender can be out on parole after 6. -
This is not true - the tarrif (prison portion) is given as a minimum - if they get 12 years, then they will serve a MINIMUM of 12 years. And unlike other sentencing, there's no guarantee of release at the 12 year mark and even when they are released, the life portion can never be served. So they can get recalled to prison etc.Originally posted by JohntheBike View PostLife imprisonment for murder can be as little as 12 years and an offender can be out on parole after 6.
I don't disagree that some of our sentencing is poor, but it's important to understand the nuances of a life sentence vs an ordinary sentence.Comment

OK, but even 12 years is clearly too low. Life imprisonment should mean they die in prison.Originally posted by vwdan View PostThis is not true - the tarrif (prison portion) is given as a minimum - if they get 12 years, then they will serve a MINIMUM of 12 years. Well instead of them dying in prison, which is all at a taxpayers expense for a number of years, why not just execute them and save money?Originally posted by JohntheBike View PostOK, but even 12 years is clearly too low. Sounds like we need another referendum once we have got control of our own laws back, also make it retrospective so Huntley pays for his crimesOriginally posted by darmstadt View PostWell instead of them dying in prison, which is all at a taxpayers expense for a number of years, why not just execute them and save money?Comment
