Payments to NHS trust suppliers are being held up in order to protect frontline services as hospitals fall deeper into the red, a government investigation has revealed.
It is claimed several trusts have been unable to meet 30-day repayment terms, often taking more than double that time or only paying once threatened with legal action.
Suppliers reported that Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust was often taking 68 days to meet payment terms.
The trust told government investigators it had a £13m cash shortfall and had to “reduce the outflow of cash in payments” in order to “protect the running of key clinical services”.
