I maintained an entire WAN with BGP redistributing into OSPF thanks to my little O'Reiily book of getting you out the sh*t.

    Don't leave home without it.

Rubbish. In my current contract I'm filtering the requirements, designing the database, implementing database feed import procedures, designing the application and finally coding the application. On my own. It's not a small application either, but for obvious reasons I'm not gonna say what it is here.

If that's your definition of a code monkey, then fine. It isn't mine though.

I currently do Network Consultancy in telecoms, mainly Cisco stuff. Moving into VoIP arena next year hopefully...
        The rest is silence...

            Everyone's a feckin 'architect'.

            Listen up.

Real architects are very clever, creative, educated people who design huge buildings and control vast project teams with even vaster budgets -- they don't create tulipty little bits of of software under Linux/Windows.

Being an Architect is HARD. There are lots of very, very difficult things you have to really understand - not the same as winging it with an O'Reilly book on your lap!

It's like the bloody "I'm a professional" thing all over again.

I lused to live in wee street on a 'cutting-edge' development built by some award-winning architects. There were three other architects living in the street. The buildings basically fell down due to piss-poor design (netting me loads in hush money) and the other 'real' architect neighbours weren't too smart either.

So there you have it! You have a lot to thank real architects for!

Did that book tell you to redistribute the entire BGP routing table into OSPF?
It always amazes me how many amateurs do real critical work nowadays...everyone goes for a CCNA then yupiii here comes the master of networks...

If only. I'd previously worked on some rubbish WAN's using RIPv2, and needed some pointers to get me back up to speed with BGP again.

Now working in a place that is totally Nortel - no Cisco whatsoever.

And yep, I have got my CCNA - although got it 6 years ago, so will have to take it again to do my CCNP.
