The sequel trilogy was never about the Skywalkers, so it was always going to be a gentle nod to the past rather have them as any major story arc

Well it would have been if they'd done them 20 years ago instead of the crappy prequel trilogy, when Ford, Hamill, and Fisher were still in their prime. They could have done pretty much what they're doing in the new trilogy, but with a more youthful original trio to offer a better transition than a load of geriatrics that are too old to be relatable to when the fans last saw them on screen.

I suppose like many successful music artists they think they're better than what made them successful and only go back to their roots when they're too old and decrepit to make it work anymore. Though in this case maybe George Lucas was just as much to blame for the lack of Skywalker sequels when they made more sense.

So when they finally decide to milk the franchise some more, they come up with some weak transition story to cash in on the older fans.

It probably comes down to direction. Even great actors can look like hams if the director doesn't do his job.

And ironically the only surviving character of the original trilogy on screen is the only one who has died in real life.

I didn't like the film at all. Luke's death (or has he actually died) was unnecessary and felt forced (pardon the pun). The whole training Rey thing was BS. Superwoman Leia in space was a joke.

Kylo Ren reminds me of a spoilt millennial and not threatening at all or maybe that was the intent in which case i am too old for this film.

Snoke as a character was pointless and apparently he cant tell when a lightsaber is going to turn and split him in half yet he is strong with the force.

The entire Finn and whatshername nonsense was just that.

And finally if a kamikaze jump to light speed could take down a large first order ship then why wasn't it done right at the start instead of after a few hundred people died. Again this seemed manufactured and a lame attempt at creating a "hero".

In a nutshell the movie felt designed by committee.

I loved this film but I agree with one of the comments, they did seem to cram too much into the film. I did still enjoy it very much though.

Ever since I saw TESB, I wanted the next Star Wars film to be as good as Empire was.

In advance of this one, I thought that The Last Jedi was finally going to be that film - the one where we see Luke as the most powerful Jedi ever (as was predicted of Anakin). However, the film that I planned in my mind wasn't the one that Lusasfilm produced.

For over 35 years, I've waited and watched Star Wars: A Fake Hope - film after film that I hoped would live up to Empire but never did and never will. But I've still watched every Star Wars film more than once (some significantly more than once) - and every rewatch brings new things.

On the second watching of The Last Jedi, it finally dawned on me - no Star Wars film will ever be Empire, and nor does it have to be. It doesn't have to compete because it's never going to fill me with the same feelings that Empire did that first time that I watched it. I am lucky enough that when I was young, I went to the cinema and watched Empire when it came out - and nothing can take away that experience.

The new trilogy, and the future sequels, will never give me anything like that same experience - but it's not about those of us that saw the originals as they came out (or even on the Despecialised editions that you can find online). It's about exciting and inspiring and giving the future generations that wonder and imagination boost that the original films did for people like me who got caught up at an early age and hooked ever since.

And if they can do that, then I think that's pretty amazing.

In Return of the Jedi, it was shielded and if the shield was down they could just fly in as it was half missing.

Starkiller base was a planet, thousands of times bigger than snokes ship.

... It's about exciting and inspiring and giving the future generations that wonder and imagination boost that the original films did for people like me who got caught up at an early age and hooked ever since.

And if they can do that, then I think that's pretty amazing.

I suppose it's a sign of the times if the new generation enjoy these films as much as we the older generation did the original trilogy.

The new characters had much promise in Force Awakens but that all seems to have been pissed away in Last Jedi. So much so that it was the old guard left with trying to carry the movie while the new characters were either bit parts (Phasma, Maz) or had dull progression (Rey, lifted some stones; Poe - U-turn coward; Finn - erm, pointless mission with a new love interest; Ren - almost turned into something interesting then on with the old 'conquer the galaxy' bollox).

The youngsters must be easily pleased.

Fair points, but I'm sure they could have stolen a bigger commercial ship if they didn't have one in the rebel fleet. It was just a move never mentioned possible in the earlier movies, like running out of fuel I suppose.
